Tanganyika Wildlife Park

Volunteer at TWP

Tanganyika Wildlife Park needs your help.

Volunteers are a crucial element for Tanganyika. Our volunteers help out in numerous areas around the Park, and many events and programs offered by Tanganyika would not be possible without volunteer help. Volunteers, in turn, are able to give back to the community and have a truly unique volunteer experience. Tanganyika currently offers several different volunteer opportunities. If you have any questions about volunteering at Tanganyika, don't hesitate to contact the Education Department by emailing edu@twpark.com or calling 316-794-8954 ext 102.

Volunteer Opportunities for IndividualsView open positions

Short-Term Volunteers

Do you want to see what volunteering at Tanganyika is all about? Come out for a few hours and help at the Interactive Experiences, make treats for the animals, help with special events, or work on other special projects around the Park! Volunteer opportunities are available most weekends during the Park’s open season (March through November). This volunteer opportunity is also great for groups or anyone looking to fulfill community service requirements. Most short-term opportunities are available for children as young as 11 (with a parent or guardian) and youth ages 14 and older may volunteer on their own. If you are interested in volunteering, email edu@twpark.com or call 316-794-8954 ext. 102 to get on the volunteer mailing list!

Family Volunteer Workdays

Volunteering can become a family affair at Tanganyika! Beginning in April, join us on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for our Family Volunteer Workdays! There is no age limit for volunteers, and we'll have projects that even your littlest volunteers can help with. We do have a limited capacity for these workdays, so to get signed up, email edu@twpark.com or call 316-794-8954 today!

Docent Program

Short-term volunteers age 14 and up have the opportunity to join the Docent Program, our only year-round volunteer program. Docents help out with a variety of activities around the Park including hangling many of the education animals, leading Guided Tours, assisting with education classes and programs, helping with special events, assisting at Interactive Exhibits, and helping out with special projects.

Docents are able to set their own schedules by signing up for programs and activities that suit their interests and availability. Because Docents are able to help with so many exciting activities, we do require new Docents to attend a training class that meets one evening per week for 4 weeks. Training classes generally begin in February, April, June, August, and September, though exact dates may vary.

If you are interested in applying for the Docent Program, email edu@twpark.com or call 316-794-8954 today!

Animal Interaction Program

Tanganyika's Animal Interaction Program is a sesonal program open to volunteers age 16 and older. Participants will train to facilitate guest encounters at some of our Interactive Experiences. Volunteer duties include teaching guests how to interact with the animals, answering questions, and monitoring the exhibit. Program participants are requested to volunteer at least 4 shifts per month. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, and participants will be scheduled based on their availability.

If you are interested in applying for the Animal Interaction Program, email edu@twpark.com or call 316-794-8954 today!

Tour Guides

Thousands of school children visit Tanganyika each year on field trips, and most are treated to a Guided Tour given by one of our experienced guides. This year, one of those guides could be YOU! Tours are 30 minutes in length and visit 4 or 5 exhibits. Tours also vary by grade level, so there is a lot to learn AND teach!

Scheduling is very flexible, but availability between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday is required. Training is required for this position.  Please contact the Education Department at edu@twpark.com to apply to be a Tour Guide!

Group Greeters

Hundreds of field trips are booked at Tanganyika each year, and keeping all of those kids straight is a task for our dedicated Group Greeters. As groups arrive, Greeters will board busses and give groups important information about their visit. Greeters also direct traffic at our front gate and make sure the right field trip ends up at the right place!

Scheduling is very flexible, but availability between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday is required. Training is required for this position.  Please contact the Education Department at edu@twpark.com to apply to be a Group Greeter!
